In Houston Sunday, Germans Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske upset No. 3 seeds Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer of Austria 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 (Match Tie-break) to win the title at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.
The Germans ousted three seeded teams on their way to the title, including the World No. 1 team of Bob and Mike Bryan in the second round. The victory over the Bryans' avenged the Germans' 2004 loss to them in the quarterfinals of Hamburg.
Kohlmann and Waske have only played four tournaments together, and their 2004 Hamburg result was their best until this week. Melzer was a double loser Sunday. He dropped the singles final to Mardy Fish.
Kohlmann said: “I think they already had their names on the checks. But it was still close [when we were down] 7-5 4-1. I know that sounds pretty easy, but I think we had lost like five of five no-ad decisions. So we knew that we might get one more chance, and luckily we got one more chance, and we took it -- at 4-2 to break back. And then I think we just kept hitting winners and we were on a roll then.”
Waske said: “I’m really happy. We played a really great week. The match against the Bryans was especially huge for us. We were down a set and a break and came back and won that. Today again, a set down, break down, so we are comeback kings this week I think.”
“With the no-ad scoring, there is always a chance to break. And if you keep the pressure on the guys, and you try to just make as many points as you can, they know that things can get tight."
" We were pretty unlucky today with the no-ad scoring, because I think up until 4-2 when we made that first one, I think we lost six or seven. So it was about time that we were gonna win one, and it was close. So we kind of figured that if we can keep it close, we can have a good chance of winning that."
